Report: (Eric Janke) It was just 4 days to Christmas, but the spell of mild weather tempted both fungi and forayers out out their hiding places, for final foray of the season. Locals Vicki Jordan and Eric and Sue Janke were joined by Sue Rogerson, Alan Lucas, Sara Cadbury, Jean-Paul Butcher and Jacqui and Roger Newton for what turned out to be little more than an extended walk around the car-park, the fungi were present in such good numbers (although most were found on wood or leaf litter). Vicki spotted a photogenic clump of Flammulina velutipes (Velvet Shank) and Eric almost stood on a cluster of Clavaria fragilis (White Spindles). Alan called for a photographic record of the toothy Cristina gallica and Phleogena faginea (Fenugreek stalkball) was found in profusion on a beech trunk. Again, we found Hygrophorus arbustivus, which seems to be a Crab Wood habitué and on our way back to the cars, Alan tripped over (!) some tiny fruiting bodies on a spindle-leaf, looking for all the world like bleached sea-urchins or tufts of Cotton grass. At the last count this was tentatively identified as Flagelloscypha niveola (see Funga Nordica) which would be a new British record, this has now been agreed by Alick Henrici at Kew along with it's new name of Seticyphella niveola (Sacc.) Agerer. The new genus is due to the crystals on the ends of the hairs. After a hard morning's recording for Alan, the group adjourned to the nearby Janke household to partake of (a few bottles of) seasonal fare and confirm some of the more straight-forward (sic) identifications. Merry Christmas to all our readers and we hope to see you at the AGM on St Valentine's Day...
