Farley Mount, Hampshire

Sat 31 May 2008

Field event ID HF0805

OS Grid areas: SU5229

Weather: There had been considerable rain in the preceding two which necessitated the closing of Southampton Railway station on one day. The day itself was a beautiful sunny day with clear skies and a few midges in the air honing their biting skills.

Report: The group was enriched once again by some members from Shrooms who as always were very welcome. The grassy slopes of Farley Mount had benefitted from the recent rains by producing some 'little brown jobs' to challenge our skills and also quite an extensive patch of Conocybe apala (formerly lactea) with it's white cap resembling a closed umbrella and orange gills, a species which has been reported from many locations this spring. (I saw it covering the lawns of a house in Lancashire two weeks later.) Agrocybe pediades turned out to be one of the common LBJs present on the slopes. Sara was chuffed to find an ascobolus growing on wood rather than dung and then track it down with a bit of microscope work to A foliicola. Tina found a Phallus impudicus egg which gave the opportunity for newcomers to throw caution to the wind and savour its crunchy centre tasting of broccoli stem!
