New to HFRG: Clitopilus scyphoides var. scyphoides
Report: (Alan Lucas): Although Pig Bush has not been very productive in recent years we have always felt that it still has the past potential to give us those big summer Boletes that it’s famous for including B rhodopurpureus. Unfortunately on the day it only produced one bolete, Boletus aereus. Apart from this the day produced a Nectria on holly, N punicia var. ilicis not previously recorded by the group. After lunch at Culverly car park we forayed in Pennerley Wood in the afternoon and found a couple of nice fungi including Clitopilus scyphoides, a miniature version of C prunulus, found by Alan and the brightly coloured orange brown Hymenochaete cinnamomea found by Sue. Because this site is home to Piptoporus quercinus, it was a good opportunity to show it to those members who have not seen it before. The route we took was slightly different to normal which was fortunate because Sara found a new location quite close to the others now making a total of 4 trees with it on. A Xerocomus was found and Alan, Sue and Sara thought it would be a good opportunity to test the new Key in Field Mycology, after much head scratching and the Key coming up with suggestions it obviously was not we agreed it needs further testing.
Follow up: Our thanks go to Alan Hills who I believe spent three hours at the microscope before eventually finding the blue hyphae in the stem base confirming its identity as X pruinatus, which curiously was the name initially suggested in the field.
