Report: Millyford bridge has always been one of the star sites of the New Forest and although it is still early the season we were not to be disappointed. Early on whilst members were examining some pluteus fruitbodies on a log Alan noticed some brown spores settling inside a hollow beech stump and sure enough there was another specimen of Phellinus cavicola lurking in the depths. Although the area is known for Phellodon and Hydnellum Eric found a previously unknown clump of Phellodon confluens with it's grey spines and white cap. Flammulaster muricatus provided a good photo opportunity before lunch. Continuing on from last week's flush of Russula species Eric increased the final list to sixteen species. There were four boletes and a handful of lactarius species confirming the season is with us. Amongst the lactarius was a white fruitbody with closely packed gills which Eric found early on, raising the possibility of L piperatus. When we had a look over lunch the milk had turned a lovely green colour, the application of some NaOH to milk turned it a vivid orange colour which confirmed the species to be L glaucescens, a species with only a few UK records and new record for Hampshire. Near the end of the foray a cry was heard from the bushes which most of us ignored to our loss as Sue had found a specimen of Spongipellis delectans, another new species for the group.
