Ashford Hill

Weather: Following a week of British springtime 'changeable' weather we were fortunate to have a dry and pleasant day.

New Records:
New to HFRG: Lachnellula occidentalis, Inocybe assimilata

Report: Those adventurous members of the HFRG who dared to travel to the far North - well of Hampshire anyway, were joined by three keen forayers of 'Shrooms group for a joint foray around the Holt at Ashford Hill. Entering the wood from the south for the first time the HFRG leaders took a while to get their bearing particularly as new deer fencing had been erected on the site and they had not bothered to bring a map! Along the path leading to the woods we were soon treated to a fine patch of Helvella (Paxina) acetabulum (Vinegar cup) spotted by the sharp young eyes of 'Shrooms member Nick Cantle which provided a good photo opportunity for the wonderful display of camera equipment. One of the most prolific fungi early on was a member of that tricky group Inocybe which Alan and Stuart later independently concluded was Inocybe assimilata, so maybe it was. After his success last week Alan also found a small cup fungus on some larch branches which turned out to be yet another Lachnellula, on this occasion it was occidentalis. Those members who stayed to end were treated to an amazing patch of logs found by John Parsons along the stream side in the valley bottom. There were three Polyporus species - ciliatus (Fringed) , brumalis (Winter) and several fine specimens of tuberaster (Tuberous polypore) accompanied by Scutellinia scutellata (Eyelash fungus), Datronia mollis (Common mazegill) and the lovely small orange Mycena acicula (Orange bonnet). Both groups agreed it had been a very succesful day and decided to meet again for a further date.
