Documenting the Fungi of Hampshire

Gritnam Wood

Sat 12 Jul 2008

Field event ID HF0807

OS Grid areas: SU2806

Weather: July is following last year's weather pattern with successive low pressure systems crossing the country in quick succession, not good for holidaymakers but good for fungi. The sphagnum was suitably wet with Stuart getting one boot full of mud!

New Records:
New to HFRG: Hygrocybe turunda, Hyphodontia alutacea, Galerina tibiicystis
New to Hampshire: Hygrocybe coccineocrenata

Report: (Alan Lucas) The group feared there may not be 'much about' but as you can see from the list we had a reasonable foray with some nice finds including a new Hampshire record of Hygrocybe coccineocrenata found by Paul at the bottom of Gritnam wood in some damp ground amongst sphagnum. Barry suggested the name at the time having seen it previously in Scotland and further examination at home seemed to fit. There was a second scurfy orange red specimen with dark squamules found not far away by Eric. Later examination of this specimen best fitted H turunda as described in Boertmann. If you want to test the little grey cells have a look at the descriptions of these species in a few sources and there are a myriad of names and species concepts with Boertmann suggesting they may all be varieties of one species! There were two unusual resupinates found, one found by Sue was Hyphoderma macedonicum with only a few records on the FRDBI and the other Hyphodontia alutacea found by Alan which turned out to be a new record for the group. There was some great excitement when Eric found a small agaric on a log and many photos were taken with hopes of it being something special but alas it was just Simocybe centunculus just looking a bit different from usual.

Back at Sue’s house with the evenings ID work coming to a close we had a call from Joan Taylor who was very excited about a Paxillus she had found and hoped we would look at it for her to confirm it was vernalis. Sue said why not, bring it straight over so the jacket potato in the oven was switched off and over she came. It had all the right features for Paxillus vernalis so the material has been dried and sent to Geoffrey Kibby (he found the first record) If he agrees with us it will be only the second British record, so well done Joan. There is an article about the species in Field Mycology January 2008.
