Weather: A dry hot summer's day after a week with no rain and temperatures in the high twenties.

New to HFRG: Pilobolus oedipus, Tubulicrinis subulatus
Report: 'Russulas are us' had to be the theme of what initially looked to be a day of the scorched earth policy. Amongst the russulas was a splendid green russula that we found just before lunch. 'Heterophylla' was the name floating about but subsequent microscopic examination by Stuart, Eric and Paul led to them all coming to the same conclusion, perhaps Geoffrey's workshop last year penetrated to the 'little grey cells'. R aeruginea was the final conclusion. For want of a change Sara and Stuart cracked open a fine specimen of horse dung to find some pilobolus flourishing well. A genus with only three previous records by the group Sara and Stuart reached for Ellis and Ellis and after a few emails back and forth came to the conclusion it was P oedipus, a new species for the group. On the health and safety front one or two of us spotted ticks crawling about whilst we were in the field but subsequently Roger claimed Jacquey found 36 ticks on him…..!! Enough information I think. For a short while we diverted from fungi when Roger and Jacquey found several specimens of the broad leaved helleborine making Copythorne a new site for this orchid.
