Baddesley Common

Sun 25 May 2008

Field event ID HF0804

OS Grid areas: SU3821 SU3921

Weather: Baddesley to find the heavy rain of the previous night had stopped. It was the first rain for probably a couple of weeks or more.

Report: On this occasion we concentrated on Baddesley Common instead of going straight on to Emer Bog, an area with some open patches and some boggy willow areas. Chris found our first Russula of the year but unfortunately the rain had taken its toll and it could not be identified, as was the case for a single scuttelinia specimen I found on a fire site a real shame. Sara found some Merismodes anomalus with its very unusual little tubes. (For those with Breitenbach and Krantlin the photograph is upside down!) Nearby I found what I thought was a cyphelloid fungus but after great investigation not least of all by Alan it turned out to be an insect cocoon with its lid off, how we can all be fooled?! We did however find the tiny brown Cyphella ferruginea on a salix branch, a species with only 14 records on the FRDBI of which the last eight entries since 2001 have involved Alan Lucas. Other species to note are Fibriciellum silvae-ryae that we have now recorded on several occasions making up a considerable contribution to the database. We also found several specimens of the smart little fungus Phaeomarasmius erinaceus found usually growing on salix. So all in all a good day
