Report: (Alan Lucas) Burghclere Lime Quarry is a steep-sided area of open chalk grassland surrounded by trees. The leader, Eric Janke was joined by a few “Bold Foresters” and a good number of members of the Thames valley group.The weather started icy and warmed up to a mere 3-4 degrees, and as a consequence, many of the fruitbodies were frozed solid and then thawed into Coprinus-like soup. This limited the number of species recorded, but there were a few interesting finds; Mike Waterman came out of a thicket with a lump of wood with a good number of Chlorosplenium aeruginascens (green elf cap), but the wood was also covered with the toothed resupinate, Grandinia arguta, on which was growing Catinella olivacea. In the open grassland, there were many grey/brown Dermalomas, some of which recovered to drop enough spores to allow them to be named as pseudocuneifolium, typical of the habitat and a couple of logs turned out to be hiding the yellow-stemmed Pluteus romelii. Sara found the moth ball smelling fungus Scytinostroma portentosum on a Salix branch.
