Weather: Holding the foray in June finally broke the wet Noar Hill tradition and we had a dry, warm and mostly sunny day. We only just escaped the rain as the roads in the area had been impassible for a while the previous day due to a sudden deluge of rain which ha

Report: Roger and Jacqui led the foray and for the first part of the day we combined looking for fungi with admiring the orchids which were in peak condition. In all seven species of orchid were seen including the site's speciality, the musk orchid. No one undertook a study of the associated mycorrhizal fungi! Although there were not many fungi to be found those that were about were in good condition due to the recent rains including Psathyrella candolleana (Pale Brittlestem) and P marcescibilis, the latter also found and identified by Paul Hugill the preceding day. Agaricus impudicus turned up, a reddening agaricus with pink gills when young which I had nearly eaten many years ago until we noticed it's unpleasant smell, reminiscent of a yellow stainer. Sue found a new species for Hampshire on the bramble stems, subsequently identified by Alan as Pyrenopeziza escharodes. We found specimens of both Phellinus ferreus (Cinnamon Porecrust) and P ferruginosus (Rusty Porecrust) and Alan showed us the latter's setae which were visible under the surface of the wood with a hand lens.
