Weather: A showery day one of which was quite heavy, although the sun came out just as the foray ended! The forest remains wet with lots of surface water following the continuing rains of the wettest summer for decades.
Report: This was a new site with many fallen oaks although probably not old enough for the oak polypore which should be fruiting now. There were only a few of us foolhardy enough to brave the weather and there were some interesting finds to sustain us through the wet. The most spectacular was a cluster of the large white Pluteus petasatus on a fallen beech trunk, a species only recorded once previously by the group at Eyeworth last year. From the large to the small we also found newly erumpent fruitbodies of Hypoxylon howeanum. This first erupts in the anamorph stage (Nodulisporium) as a bunch of pale finger like excrescences looking like an upside mop. The russet hemispherical teleomorph stage then appears in the middle looking like a monks bald head with surrounding hairs according to one of those present.
