Weather: Although the day was sunny and warm the forest was very wet following several weeks of rain.

Report: Despite several members of the group attending the Bolete workshop in Romsey there was still a good turn out for this often very productive site. The only bolete to be found was taken to the workshop and subsequently identified by Alan Hills as the rarely found leccinum schistophilum (previously L palustre). The stipe had turned a vivid turquoise blue by the time it reached Romsey, a striking character of the species. Two other unusual species were found. The first was Fomes fomentarius which is usually found on beech in Hampshire but on this occasion was found on birch which is the typical host in Scotland. The second was Cortinarius rubellus (better known as Cortinarius speciosissimus, the deadly webcap) again notable in Scotland where it has been mistaken for Cantharellus cibarius (Chanterelle). The toxins damage the kidneys and those unfortunate enough to have eaten it require a kidney transplant or permanent dialysis to survive. It has been found in the New Forest before but only once in the last 20 years.
