Weather: The dry spell continued over the past week but we hoped there would still be some dampness in the bog itself.

Report: In view of the continuing dry spell everyone made for the centre of the bog as soon as possible in the hope of getting mud on their boots. Once again most of the fungi were resupinates on wood although there were a few agarics including Psathyrella candolleana (Pale Brittlestem) and the delicate Hemimycena tortuosa (Dewdrop Bonnet) with water droplets on the stem despite the dry weather. There were beautiful clusters of Scutellinia on the logs and also further fruitbodies on the ground. After looking at Brian Spooner's Key and Nordic Macromycetes it was decided to settle on two species namely S scutellata on the wood and S umbrorum on the soil. The keys are certainly not easy to follow! The other specimen of interest was a beautiful pink lilac resupinate growing on a large fallen branch which Eric decided to carry several hundred yards out of the centre of the bog! Looking through the Corticiaceae of N Europe a match was found for a described but unnamed species 'Hyphoderma de Vries 488' except that it made no mention of the striking colour (I have photos). In case this was new to Britain Alan and Stuart returned the next day to find the colour had faded to off-white matching the description. An internet search found the species had subsequently been named as Hyphoderma cryptocallimon and sadly has been recorded in Britain including Hampshire.Still, it kept the troops occupied. See http://tinyurl.com/27g6gj for a description.
