Exbury - Sat 21 Nov 2015
Field event ID: HF1527
New to Hampshire: Hygrocybe psittacina var. perplexa, Inocybe hystrix
OS Grid areas: SU4200
Weather: A blustery day but thankfully the rain held off whilst we were there. The season was still mild with no significant frosts.
Report: Thanks to Juliet Bloss and Sara Cadbury HFRG was once again able to visit Exbury Gardens late in the season and following a mild autumn and lack of frosts we were hopeful the grassland fungi would be flourishing. We were not disappointed and were treated to a good display of waxcaps (10) along with club fungi (8), earth tongues (2) and crazed caps (1), all specialist fungi of unimproved grassland. I am sure there were still more to be identified but with over 100 species seen and recorded on the day time was running out. We did look for the Piggyback Pinkgill (Volvariella surrecta) which was seen the previous year and found a few specimens on the typically deformed specimens of Clitocybe nebularis (Clouded Agaric) which is a useful indicator of the presence of the invader. There were different shades of the Parrot waxcap some greenish yellow and other groups had a more reddish brown colouring. Recent DNA work has shown there to be several species in this group which is now placed in the new genus Gliophorus and at present Kew would be interested in any future collections. Another new species to the group was Inocybe hystrix (Scaly Fibrecap) which only has a couple of other old Hampshire records and certainly does live up to its 'scaly' epithet.
