Report: Six forayers met in light rain at Dilton Gardens to explore Calveslease Copse. We followed the course of the stream downhill hoping the dampness would help our search. Three reddening fungi were found early on - Stereum rugosum on birch and Stereum gausapatum on it's usual habitat of oak. Alan pointed out how the glassy edge of the third reddening species, Physisporinus sanguinolentus, helped to distinguish it from Ceriporiopsis gilvescens a name also suggested by the group. Shortly after this Alan and Sue, who had moved away from the group, became extremely agitated and excited and called us over to see a spectacularly yellow poroid growing under the mossy bark of a fallen Ash covering tens of centimetres. No one in the group had any idea of a name for such a distinctive fungus although Eric thought it rang a bell somewhere. Specimens were taken along with photographs and the group just managed to curb the desire to return home to identify this further and carry on with the foray. This turned out to be Lindtneria trachyspora with spectacular winged spores to add to the vivid yellow colour. Eric was correct and there is picture in B&K which he had recalled. There are only a handful of records on the Britain and Ireland database and it is certainly a first for Hampshire. After lunch we came across a very productive beech tree on which were growing a Pleurotus, Ganoderma australe, Schizophyllum commune, Oudemansiella mucida, Peziza micropus and Aurantiporus fissilis. A visit to the elm logs failed to produce any finds of Rhodatus palmatus but a visit to the 'phleogena' beech gave everyone a chance to see the Fenugreek Stiltball before returning home. In the evening several members went to Sue's house for a meal and a microscope session to check out the days finds.
