Marlborough Deeps

OS Grid areas: SZ2298 SZ2299

Report: Peter Thompson, who was down from the Midlands for the weekend met nine others at Brownhill car park before setting off to Marlborough Deeps to find some damp patches of woodland. The approach over the heathland produced very few fruitbodies and we were hard pressed to find any tremella on the gorse. In the marl pits there were a few more fungi although still few and far between. There was interest in small intensely green patches erupting through the bark of a fallen oak. Sara recognised this as the anamorph Trichoderma viride. Trichodermas include the fungus that is used to produce 'stone washed' jeans and if you want read further on this have a look at Tom Volk's website at http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/Toms_fungi/nov2004.html . There were a few Pluteus about including P nanus and a pale capped fruitbody we named as P bouderi (Courtecuisse) in the field but looking at the British Checklist this has been synonymised with P plautus. B&K has a photo of the pale version inset along with a discussion of white pluteus species. The most prolific display of the day was a log covered with Coprinus disseminatus (Fairy inkcap) providing a photo opportunity for all.
