Report: Forays at Noar Hill seem to have the same effect on the weather as an English Test Match although on this occasion we were only subjected to light showers and drizzle instead of the deluge experienced on previous forays here. Two notable fungi of the site Gymnosporangium clavariiforme (Tongues of Fire) and Tulostoma brumale (Winter Stalkball) were both in evidence and provided good photographic opportunities for all. Despite being St George's day no fungi bearing that name were found (they seem to appear a week or so later) although two spring agarics we did find both had a ring and both were on a firesite, the first was a fine specimen of Agrocybe praecox and the second was Conocybe aporus. There were several species found on wood and some group members were pleasantly surprised to be able to recall their names especially that of the reportedly rare Dichomitus campestris, a poroid cushion shaped fungus and one of several found by Greg on his first foray with us. Near the end of the foray Alan turned over another log and recognised a fruitbody smelling strongly of moth balls which he gave to one or two members to take away to identify as homework - it was Scytinostroma portentosum. At the end of the day over 40 species were recorded.
