Report: Following a couple of days which saw parts of Hampshire, including Winchester, covered in snow there was some concern about whether to meet at The Vyne. Luckily for all the snow missed this part of Hampshire and on a clear crisp sunny day we met with the ground manager from the Vyne Corina Dawson, along with Eddie Robbins and Nick Montegriffo who guided us around the estate. There were areas of grazed grassland, parkland with isolated trees and extensive deciduous and coniferous woodland some of which was old pollarded trees and some more recent plantations. Fallen trees were left on the ground or stacked to provide decaying wood habitat. We only managed to cover a small area of the estate and thought it would be worth returning another time. Dispite the recent cold spell nearly 100 species were recorded. An unusual specimen of Phaeolus schweinitzii was found which was growing in a vertical columnar fashion rather than the more usual tiered bracket formation. A pale almost white form of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca was found which in the new checklist could be var pallida. The epithet Hygrophoropsis pallida is no longer valid and is now Hygrophoropsis macrospora, a species which has few voucher specimens. Amongst the resupinates the less commonly recorded species included Eichleriella deglubens with it's huge basidia and Phlebia lilascens. It was a day for unusual growth forms because near the end of the day a bracket was found growing on a Prunus stump which caused some difficulty in identification. It had many of the microscopic features of Phellinus pomaceus and maybe it's growth form was affected by it's proximity to the top of the stump. Our thanks go to Corina for making the foray possible and also to Nick for helping to guide us around.
