Report: After two weeks of intermittent rain the group met at Pig Bush filled hopeful of finding some summer boletes on a foray led by Sara Cadbury. Sara was accompanied by Alan Lucas, Sue Rogerson, Stuart Skeates, Mark Hampton, Sue and Eric Janke, Gordon Dickson and Ann Leonard. Dispite an early find in Pig Bush itself of an Agaricus and a fallen trunk bearing fresh white fruitbodies, which later were determined to be Crepidotus applanatus, no boletes were found until the group decided to cross the road into Pennerley Wood to see the Oak Polypore (Piptoporus quercinus) at a site previously found by Alan Lucas. The fruitbodies, although past their prime, still showed recognisable features with a yellowy cap and the white pores staining a dull claret brown when damaged. Until last year this species was unrecorded in the New Forest and this area contains the only four trees where it has been found so far. So we need to keep our eyes peeled for more! Many more records have been found nationally after forayers were alerted to the fact that it appears mainly in July and August, a time outside the main fungal season. Nearby was also a magnificant specimen of Hericium cirrhata, again found previously by Alan Lucas. This species is presently being studied by Lynne Boddy at Cardiff University and if any group members find one could they let Lynne know either directly or through Alan or myself. I know I do not need to remind anyone but do not collect it as it is a protected species. Pennerley Wood was damper than Pig Bush, producing the occasional fruitbody including specimens of Boletus luridiformis, Gyroporus castaneus and Boletus pruinatus. Boletes at last! As honour was now satisfied we returned via Tantany Wood to the car park.
