New Forest: Eyeworth Wood

Report: With ice still on the surface of Eyeworth pond the group met on a sunny day to explore Eyeworth Wood and was guided by Alan. The grassland areas were not very productive but once in the shade of the woods there were still several agarics to be found including some of the beechwood indicator species including Mycoacia nothofagi (but not on the few Northofagus trees that were found later on in the day), two finds of Phleogena faginea of which one find was growing on Ganoderma australe and confirmed by Ann Leonard. Even the ganoderma caused some interest initially that it might be applanatum instead of the usual New Forest australe. Near the second find of Phleogena Alan bent down further than other members to look inside a beech log and was rewarded with a new site for Hericium erinaceus from which a sample was sent to Lynne Boddy for her research. Adrian tried hard to avoid taking any specimens home for indentification but the group appreciated him succumbing to some tempting cortinarius fruitbodies, a genus he has an interest in.
