Report: Eelmoor was another new site for the group and Alan Lucas, Sue Rogerson, Eric and Sue Janke, Tony Mundell, Betty Hansell, Stuart Skeates, Mark Hampton and Simon Moore took the opportunity to visit this SSSI on the outskirts of Farnborough airport. We would like to thank Betty Hansell from Qinetiq for arranging the visit and accompanying the group around the site, especially in view of the late arrival of Stuart. Unexpectedly Tony Mundell who used to work at Qinetiq was able to attend and guided us to areas where he had found fungi on previous occasions. The group worked hard to find fungi in the dry conditions. The find of the day was Inonotus obliquus, looking like a burr, growing on a Betula trunk and found by Alan. It is common species in Scotland as those members who went recently on the BMS autumn foray discovered but a rarity in the south of England. Another unusual find was Mycena latifolia which is not only uncommon, with only 18 records on the BMS database, but also has unusual cystidia under the microscope. Poronia punctata, an RDB species, which has been recorded previously could not be found. The previously recorded Sarcodon although not present on our visit appeared later in the year and was confirmed as S squamosus. The site has a variety of habitats with coniferous, deciduous and mixed woodland areas along with heather heathland and grassland, grazed by Przewalski horses and cattle. This grass was short and unfertilised which could be good for grassland species in wetter weather although one or two were present on our visit. It was good to find stacks of felled timber, a practice to be encouraged from a mycological stance, as it provides significant new habitats for fungi as well as other wildlife, even including the brash, twiggy parts of the tree. As the surviving turkey oaks are due to be removed it is worth remembering that Hericium erinaceum has been recorded on felled turkey oaks. As is so often the case in dry weather only one or two specimens were found of usually abundant species. On such a large site it is not possible to cover all areas and further surveys at other times of the year and in hopefully more favourable conditions would produce significantly more species. The site has great potential with its varied habitats that have already produced some RDB species.
